Sitting at my desk in the cool months of early spring, I work diligently on tiny faces. As each piece comes together, I wonder how I can give these tiny works of art a proper frame. I recall the miniature shadow boxes I made out of matboard a few years back. I decide a handmade shadow box would be the perfect display for my tiny portraits.

I often procrastinate on stretching outside of my comfort zone, maybe you can relate. Submitting my artwork to Somerset Studio for publication had been on my mind for quite some time. After creating this collection of miniatures, I knew I could not delay any longer. I saw the potential of them being on the pages of Somerset Studio and I longed to share my art making process with a larger audience. So I packaged them and shipped them off to Stampington & Company, with no expectations.

A few months later I received an email from the editor, letting me know that my portraits would be featured in somerset studio. She requested an article on how to make the miniature portraits. After the initial excitement I started to feel vulnerable. Getting published by a magazine was a huge step in putting my artwork out in the world. I worked through my insecurities as I typed away at my computer. I learned that accomplishments can come with tears and hard work, not just the labor of the task, but the emotional work too.

Now, as the year ends, I am delighted to see my portraits and article on the pages of Somerset Studio Winter 2020. I am so grateful for my friends, family, and all of you who support me. I continue to push myself out of my comfort zone, continue to share my process and the healing that comes from it.
